The Russian club at TCNJ helped teach the students in first-year Russian how to make pysanki (Ukrainian: писанка, plural: pysanki), the Ukrainian Easter egg. These eggs are decorated with traditional Ukrainian folk designs using a wax-resist (batik) method. The word pysanka comes from the Ukrainian verb pysaty, “to write”, (in Russian: ‘pisat’). The designs are not painted on, but written with beeswax and then dipped in different dyes.
