Study Abroad Opportunities in Japan

If you’re going abroad next semester, try the At Home in Japan tutorial

TCNJ offers opportunities for semester- or year-long study in Japan. Click here for an overview of each.

UPDATED 11/08: Study abroad applications for Fall, 2009 or the 2009-2010 academic year are due Feb. 27, 2009.

Kansai Gaidai Asian Studies Program
: This is a direct exchange program, and the majority of students at TCNJ go to this university. Starting in 2007-2008, TCNJ began welcoming Japanese students from Kansai Gaidai to the TCNJ campus. Kansai Gaidai offers all levels of Japanese language study, in addition to a full complement of content courses related to Japan that are taught in English. Interested students should note that the application deadline for this program can be very early, in some cases as much as a full 12 months before they plan to study abroad.

Sophia University (CIEE): Spring semester or year-long study in Tokyo at one of Japan’s top-ranked universities. Sophia offers excellent language training, an extensive array of non-language courses, and the opportunity to take courses with both Japanese and international students. Interested students should note that the CIEE Sophia program follows the Japanese academic calendar, so semester start and end dates are significantly different from those in the United States.

Scholarship opportunities for students studying abroad during the academic year:
Bridging Scholarships (not applicable to summer programs)

Boren Scholarships (for at least two semesters; limited summer program eligibility)
Gilman International Scholarships (not applicable to summer programs)

For more information on these programs contact the International & Off-Campus Programs Office or Holly Didi-Ogren, Japanese study abroad program advisor.
