Dr. Jiayan Mi, professor of Chinese, gave a presentation on the “poetry of protests” to commemorate the 1989 massacre at Tiananmen Square.
Dr. Mi’s talk included a reading and discussion of 18 poems (in English translation), by 13 poets, to commemorate the June Fourth Tiananmen Square Crackdown. The 1989 Lecture series marks the 25th anniversary of 1989, which was the year the Tiananmen Square demonstrations occurred, the Berlin Wall fell, and Mandela’s release from prison was negotiated.
